Sheep have a reputation for holding tenuously onto life. I’ve lost track of the number of times someone has reported that “sheep are always finding a new way to die.” I’m happy to report that in my first year as a shepherd, I’ve found this reputation most undeserved — my crew seem quite tenacious about staying alive. However, they have proven somewhat accident-prone.
This gal wasn’t moving to a new paddock along with the rest of the flock, and was shouting in dismay; I didn’t understand what was going on until I saw that she had gotten herself tangled in the pull rope for my cargo sled. She was none the worse for wear once I unlooped her.
I admit to finding these sorts of incidents endearing, probably because I’m similarly accident-prone. I’m in awe of Cass and Luc’s extreme grace, but I feel kinship with my clumsy sheep.
