I started last winter with no stockpiled firewood, and I spent the season cutting frantically, staying just barely ahead of the cold.  I promised myself that I wouldn’t do that again, and aimed to have a winter’s worth (6 months worth, really) of firewood cut, split, and stacked by early summer.  It’s now October, a couple things got in the way of my righteous plan, and it was 55º in my bedroom this morning; but I’m not quite as screwed as I was last year at this time.

I managed to get a couple of cords cut during the summer, of the 10-12 cords I think I’ll need.  But my salvation will be all the trees that Eversource cut down along the power lines.  Mark Smith and his amazing skidder consolidated the big stems into a couple of landing areas,

and all I have to do is make those tree trunks into firewood.

I have high hopes that I’ll have my 12 cords put up before the heating season begins in earnest, but I also used to think I would become an academic chemist.  We’ll see.
