Katahdin shedding-1This is not one of Bravo’s victims*, but rather a Katahdin, a breed of hair sheep.  Most domestic sheep grow heavy wool fleeces that need to be shorn once a year, but hair sheep spontaneously shed their winter coat in the spring.  They end up having a couple of months of bad hair days, but they avoid the indignity of the Bad Haircut suffered by wool sheep.  This young ewe is the first of my eight Katahdins to start shedding; we’ll see if she’s being overly optimistic about the arrival of warmer weather.

*She’s actually missing half an ear to Bravo’s earlier exuberance, but he’s not responsible for the protruding tufts.
