When I wrote before about all the debris left on the farm by the previous owners, I focused on the large-scale objects, the things that could trip you or bump your head. The farm is also well-seeded with small things, mostly broken glass and bits of plastic, but lots of variety. I’ve become a little fixated on collecting as much of it as I can, so I tend to keep my eyes on the ground. This is a typical haul from the incidental collecting I do as I go through the day’s farm work:
I’ve become incredibly attuned to little sparkly things on the ground, but the local geology has been complicating my obsession. I’m learning that New Hampshire is know for its naturally occurring deposits of mica, and a major mica mine existed about 15 miles from my house. The result is that the sparkly things are sometimes glass
and I’m not very good at distinguishing between them from 5½ feet away, so I do a lot of bending and checking. Occasionally I find bigger chunks of mica, which still feels rather exotic.
